Dominican Bachata is a lively fusion of rhythmic bolero and Afro-Antillean genres, such as Son and Merengue. With deep lyrics expressing love and passion, the term 'bachata' originally referred to lively gatherings. Traditionally performed by a small group of musicians using guitars and percussion, the dance is characterized by sensual hip movements and a simple eight-step structure. Integral to traditional celebrations, the dance is often learned spontaneously, but there are numerous dedicated academies for its transmission.
