Why organic cotton matters: Conventionally grown cotton requires the heavy use of synthetic fertilizers, creating negative effects on water quality and dead zones deviod of aquatic life.  In developing countries, half of the pesticides used in all of agriculter are put toward cotton.  Groundwater sources are depleted when cotton is grown in places where significant irrigation is needed.
