Canine Good Citizen & Therapy Dog Prep
Class
This six-week course prepares you and your dog for the AKC
Canine Good Citizen (CGC) evaluation and the skills needed
for Therapy Dog certification.
The CGC evaluation, sanctioned by the American Kennel Club, demonstrates your dog’s training, manners, and ability to maintain focus in distracting situations. It's ideal for dogs who have completed basic obedience and is a key step toward Therapy Dog certification. Therapy Dogs can visit hospitals, nursing homes, and other settings to bring comfort to those in need.
Class Highlights:
- Practice all exercises for the CGC and Therapy Dog evaluations.
- The CGC test is included in the course fee and will be offered on week 6 of the program.
- Therapy Dog certification details, including evaluation requirements, documentation, and fees, will be provided during the course.
Requirements:
- Dogs must have prior obedience training and experience in group settings.
- Dogs must be at least one year old for Therapy Dog certification.
- Dogs must be generally friendly towards people and unreactive towards other dogs.
Special Instructions
Welcome to CGC/Therapy Dog Prep! To ensure a successful and safe experience for you and your dog, please review the following guidelines:
Health Requirements
- Dogs must be up-to-date on vaccinations and follow their veterinarian's recommended vaccination schedule.
- Provide proof of a recent negative fecal test.
What to Bring
- Leash and Collar/Harness:
- Use the harness or collar your puppy wears for walks.
- Bring a 6-foot clip leash. Retractable leashes are not allowed.
- Training Treats:
- Treats should be about the size of your pinkie fingernail and squishy for easy chewing.
- Bring more treats than you think you'll need—hungry dogs are more motivated!
- Skip dinner on class nights if needed, as your dog will get their meal from your treat bag.
- Appropriate Attire:
- Wear comfortable clothes that allow free movement.
- Closed-toed shoes are required.
- For farm classes, dress for the weather since outdoor work is common.
Class Etiquette
- Maintain a 6-foot distance from other dogs unless instructed otherwise by your trainer.
- Be prepared to listen to your instructor's guidance to ensure a safe and fun learning environment for everyone.
We look forward to helping you and your dog build confidence, bond, and develop skills in a positive, engaging setting!
