YOUR FIRST BRAZILIAN JIU-JITSU CLASS? READ THIS FIRST!
Walking into your first BJJ class can feel a little nerve-wracking, we get it. Everyone remembers what it was like to step onto the mats as a white belt surrounded by unfamiliar faces. But don't worry, our crew is friendly, laid-back and excited to welcome you.
When you arrive, you'll be greeted with a smile and handed a loaner uniform (aka a “Gi”) to get you started. We'll kick things off with a group warm-up that includes some light stretching and beginner-friendly drills to get you moving like a jiu-jitsu ninja. Then we dive into the basics: how to control your opponent, escape tough spots, stay safe from strikes and submissions—and even how to launch your own attacks.
We typically end with some supervised sparring (aka rolling), usually starting from the day's focus position. But don't stress, you won't be sparring on your very first day. This gives you a chance to observe and see how training partners push each other in a competitive but respectful and team-oriented way.
First Day Checklist:
- Shower & nail check. Keep those nails trimmed and come in
clean—good hygiene keeps everyone safe and comfortable.
- Athletic clothes. Gym shorts, t-shirts, or compression gear are
perfect under your Gi or for no Gi training.
- Flip-flops/slides. Always wear them off the mat, it's a must for
keeping our space clean.
- Water bottle. We've got water and cups if you forget, but staying
hydrated is key.
- Fresh clothes for after class. You're gonna sweat - this is a
workout!
- Most importantly, bring a good attitude and get ready to have
fun.
See you on the mats!
