Sometimes the sutras and asana feel like two separate and distinct aspects of yoga. This course will demonstrate how one feeds the other. Through asana we better understand the sutras. Through the sutras we better understand the asana. This helps us live our Yoga off the mat.
Many of us feel the deeper meaning of yoga before we are able to put it into words. While practicing we feel a sense of focus or concentration. We feel connected to our body or the others in the room. Simply put, we feel a sense of peace as we move our bodies in different directions and find the rhythm of our breath. Through the asana practice we are forced to draw our attention inward, to pay better attention, to be present and to check in rather than check out.
This four-part series articulates what is happening on our mat through the lens of the Yoga Sutras. It pinpoints different aspects of the sutras that come alive through our asana. It puts into words some of the more subtle benefits of our asana practice so that we create a deeper understanding of why we are continuously called back to our mats.
This course is for teachers and curious practitioners who are looking to both refine their asana and deepen their understanding of the sutras.
We will:
Practice several different families of asana: Standing poses, Backbends, Inversions and Arm Balances
Explore significant yoga sutras and key principles to understanding the sutras in general
Demonstrate how we can better understand both asana and the sutras when they are tied together rather than two separate aspects of Yoga.
