Students with inspiration, curiosity and an abiding love for the sculptural ceramic arts are invited to work on their sculptural ideas, from start to finish. Beyond continuing to develop basic skills and problem solving in building a ceramic artwork, finishing and glazing will be explored. Emphasis will be placed on how to enhance the final character and beauty of a ceramic sculpture. Students may choose to focus on one clay piece, or concentrate on building a series of sample tiles and small test pieces to explore various options in sculptural finishes. This may include burnishing, textural surfaces, simple oxides, fully glazing the surface, or allowing the clay body itself, to evoke its natural beauty.
About the Artist:
Caroly Van Duyn is a full-time artist and art instructor, living part time in Connecticut, North Carolina and Maine. In addition to sculptural ceramics, Caroly is a printmaker, loves to draw and create collages and works in concrete and wood. Sculpting the figure has always motivated the narrative storyteller in Caroly, with drama and action as part of her expression. Graduating from SUNY at Purchase with an MFA, she focused on trees and the ecology of our transforming environment. For her MA, she focused her thesis on Antarctic Field Notebooks in the Heroic Age of Discovery. “Story is the quintessential aspect of being human, whether recording, analyzing, illustrating or imagining!”
