CAPOEIRA (pronounced ka-poo-eyh-rah) is an Afro-Brazilian
martial art and self-defense discipline that  brings together
fighting techniques, acrobatics, dance, percussion, and songs, in a
rhythmic dialogue of body, mind, and spirit. Capoeira is such an
important art expression that it is part of the UNESCO list of
Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Abada-capoeira is
represented throughout Brazil and in over 50 countries preserving,
developing, and sharing the art of capoeira with integrity and
respect and seeking to inspire and empower people to realize their
full potential as responsible, confident, productive members of
society.
In the DC, MD and VA area, Abada-capoeira is under the guidance
of Professora Yara, who has been a capoeira practitioner since
1982, traveling around the world showing this art and teaching
since 1996, working with the most diverse groups: children,
adolescents, adults, people with special needs, and the
elderly.
Since 2008, Abada-Capoeira DC has been a leader in the promotion
in Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, DC of capoeira. The mission
of Abada-Capoeira DC is to promote, spread, and support Brazilian
arts and culture through the practice of capoeira, and to use our
practice of capoeira and associated arts to build a healthy and
more closely connected Washington, DC-area community.  We are
organized to accomplish charitable and educational goals including
working to lessen socio-economic inequality.
